Honeybees Threatened By African Beetle
African small hive beetle from Essex County is threatening the honeybee’s population. To stop the growth and spread of the beetle, the place of Essex County, Ontario Canada has been quarantined. The small hive beetle’s origin is from the sub-Saharan Africa. According to a provincial apiarist Paul Kozak last March 8, “It’s something we’re taking very seriously.” The first physical evidence of the African small hive beetle was discovered in Essex County, Ontario in September last year. What threaten the honeybee population is the small hives beetle’s larva which consumes honey, pollen, and developing honeybees.
